Assembly Speaker Oliver Issues Statement on House Republicans Inaction on Sandy Aid

(Trenton) – Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver released the following statement today in response to the inconsiderate inaction of the House Republicans on aid that would provide billions in Hurricane Sandy relief for New Jersey:

“It seems as if the House Republicans understanding of how to govern can be summed up into two basic concepts: delaying until a cliff is in sight and short-changing Americans who are most deserving of relief.

“I invite them to take a tour of our nearly non-existent shoreline while they adjourn this week. They will see what I saw in the last few months: houses stacked like kids’ playing blocks, only signage marking ruins of businesses, shattered lives and livelihoods buried in the water along with our boardwalk. They simply do not get it. Sandy aid relief is urgent. These citizens lost their homes, their businesses, and their way of life. To delay the vote on Sandy aid is inhumane.

“Its careless governing on the part of the House Republicans to make uncertain aid to the tens of thousands of Americans whose lives has significantly changed due to Hurricane Sandy. New Jersey needs Sandy relief right now.”
