(Trenton) - Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland) released the following statement Friday on the poor quality of the "NJ Today" programs on NJTV that are supposed to be replacing the newscasts formerly aired on NJN:
"I realized it's only been a week, but the quality of the 'NJ Today' program is troubling. I'm confident most New Jersey viewers would agree.
"We expected a ramp up period, but not a retreat in quality so dramatic as to drive viewers away.
"Let's face it - this program is nearly unwatchable. It's been the exact opposite of what you would expect from a newscast, though calling this a newscast is a stretch, as evidenced by the lack of a 'NJ Today' presence at important news events in New Jersey in the past week.
"I expect more from a world-class organization such as WNET than a program that relies on references to newspapers stories, stock video footage and sit-down interviews. So do New Jersey viewers who benefited from NJN all those years. WNET should have been better prepared for a better start.
"After all, if this was the format viewers wanted, then newscasts would have looked like this years ago. Obviously, they do not.
"I hope for the sake of our state that it gets better, but I fear they're going to lose their audience before any improvements are made, if any are even forthcoming.
"I urge those involved to step up to the plate and begin ensuring a newscast befitting the legacy of NJN that would benefit New Jersey viewers."
